JOHN PEEL by Mick Wall
John Peel was the most influential person in British music. From Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and T.Rex through to the Sex Pistols, The Smiths and White Stripes, Peel gave them their break on radio. His broadcasting career began in Dallas, at the height of Beatlemania, thanks to his 'Merseyside connections'. Returning to Britain in 1967, his legendary late-night show 'The Perfumed Garden' on pirate radio earned him a place at the birth of Radio 1, where he continued to work right up until his death. From 1998, his multi-award-winning show 'Home Truths' on Radio 4 cemented John Peel's status as a uniquely talented and much-treasured figure in British broadcasting.
