In these poems we are shown, with his loving eye for detail and the human element and with his affectionate humour, how inside the confines of a church building 'an oil lamp, a bell rope, or a harmonium...conjure up a whole parish of people', and, needless to say, it is a conjuration alight with his own inimitable magic.
